President Uhuru Kenyatta Thursday signed an executive order empowering county commissioners to co-ordinate government functions at the county level.
Addressing a gathering of civil servants in Nairobi, the head of state warned that cabinet secretaries and county commissioners will be held accountable for the rights and wrongs in their respective areas of jurisdiction.
The president says these civil servants should exercise the powers conferred to them to ensure that they carry out their mandates effectively.
“If i don’t sleep then you will not sleep until we ensure that there is security in the country and all citizens get the services that they are asking for from us because it is not a favor, its their right”
Meanwhile in a swift response from the opposition, Orange Democratic Movement termed the president’s move as authoritarian and against the will of the people for self governance.
A statement from ODM’S acting party leader professor Anyang Nyong’o said,this development must not be allowed to succeed because it is going to increase the wage bill, escalate constitutional crises and provoke unnecessary political tension in the country.
