The annual Bamburi Rugby Super Series tournament will this weekend for the first time head to Machakos since inception eleven years ago.
Kenyatta stadium will play host to this year’s semi-finals that will see defending champions Ndovu play Kifaru while Chui takes on Papa.
The tourney which enjoys a huge following across the country is likely to see scores of rugby lovers converge in Machakos, a move set to boost tourism in the county.
While addressing media in Machakos during a press briefing, Mrs. Faith Wathome, Minister Department of Tourism and Culture said that Machakos County is taking sports as a social activity seriously and is actively investing in sports infrastructure as exemplified by the recent renovation of Kenyatta Stadium which the county hopes to transform into a leading sports hub in the country.
“We view sports as not only a valuable social activity bringing people together but also as a potential economic empowerment tool for our youth and people.” She said.
She added: “As a Government we strongly believe that hosting major sports events is a good way to boost tourism. As such, we have set aside Kshs. 50Million that will go towards construction of 28 stadiums in our eight sub counties to promote sports and drive sports tourism in the county.
“Visitors during such events are expected to pour millions into our local economy in direct and indirect spending, which includes such things as transport, hotel stays and meals at local restaurants. This will contribute quite a portion to improving the county’s income and image.” She continued.
“It’s due to public demand and from a survey that we decided to have matches being held in Western, Nakuru and Machakos,” said Mr. Philip Jalango’o the Kenya Rugby Union Vice-Chairman.
He said it was strategic for Bamburi Rugby Super Series to take the competition to important frontiers where the game is developing so as to reel in new following and match attendance.
The KRU Chairman said the change in organization and holding matches at a single venue on rotational basis is part of efforts aimed at improving passion for rugby and brand visibility among larger crowds.
