Are you a youth aged between 18 and 35 and living in Dandora? Then you probably are a criminal suspect.
According to William Kamau a resident of Dandora every youth is presumed a criminal by the law enforcers.
“In Dandora being a youth, means you are a criminal suspect. The residents there especially the police assume you are criminal suspect,” ays Kamau.
This probably explains why majority of the jobless youth in the area have resorted to garbage collection as a way of earning a living.
Kamau says police always look for idle youth in the area and link them with criminal offences whose offenders have not been found.
Kamau says though they earn very little from what they get from the dumpsite, they are glad that it is keeping them away from trouble.
“To avoid trouble we would rather do these menial jobs like garbage collection keep off the path of the police,” he adds.
Kamau who is only 18 years old says he makes between 300 shillings to 500 shillings per day from the garbage collection.
