An underage girl in Nairobi’s Kiamaiko slums was forced to flee her home after she learnt that her father was going to give her away for marriage.
16 year old Amina Abdulahi says her father threatened to kill her if she did not agree to his demands that she gets married.
Abdulahi who sat for her KCPE exams last year and scored a total of 291 marks but could not continue with her education because her father claimed that their culture did not allow them to educate girls.
“I am 16 years old i sat for my KCPE exams last year and scored 291 marks, my father wanted to forcefully marry me off but i personally want to continue with my education,” says Amina.
“My father threatened to kill me if did not get married and that is why i fled home on Wednesday,” she adds.
Women rights activist Ruth Mumbi who rescued the girl from her father says they have reported the matter to the police and are now looking for ways to to assist the girl to go back to school.
“I got a call that there is this girl who has fled home because her father was trying to forcefully marry her off to an older man. I immediately went for her and took her at a safe place where the father cannot reach her,” says Mumbi.
“We have reported the matter to the police and also the Gender Officer in Kariokor and currently we are just working out logistics on how the girl can get back to school,” stated Mumbi
