Boxing pundits and fans are pointing out that Pacquiao and Mayweather need to fight next year to help boxing halt its downward trend. Mayweather beat Marcos Maidana at the weekend and this victory may have led to the call for the two to square it out since both boxers are expected to fight twice next year, and both are expected to retire in 2016.
Pacquiao is set to face Chris Algieri in November where it is anticipated he will emerge victorious .
A match up between Pacman and Money has been building for some time, and Mayweather has addressed the possibility for the first time in a while.
“We don’t know what the future holds, as of right now. Anything is possible. If the Pacquiao fight does happen it has to happen on Showtime pay-per-view only and have to do the fight,” he said.
“At the moment I want to go home, have a break, spend some time with my children and then see who’s next in May. Hopefully it’s Manny Pacquiao.”
He added: “Manny needs to focus on the guy that’s in front of him. Once he gets past that task we’ll see what the future holds. You saw what happened the last time with Marquez. Pacquiao wasn’t focused, he was thinking too much about Floyd Mayweather and you saw what happened (Pacquiao was knocked out in six rounds).
Mayweather and Pacquiao have failed on multiple occasions over the past five years to get something arranged, but with the 37-year-old Mayweather coming down the home stretch of his career — he has just two fights left in a six-fight deal with Showtime — and the window to book the fight slowly closing, some feel the time is now.
