In Nairobi’s Kiambiu slums, people here have few rights. And their lives have been left in hands of merciless petty thieves in the area.
This is why these slum dwellers have resorted to the use of stones as weapons to protect themselves from the escalating cases of insecurity in the area.
Pauline Andeso a resident of Kiambiu says individuals in the area carry stones in their pockets to defend themselves from criminals who attack them on their way home from work.
“When we see them coming we throw the stones at them to keep them off. It is not only me who carries the stones but there are several other people who do it,” she says.
Andeso says the criminals who majority are barely twenty years of age use two known dark spots in the area to attack their prey.
She says upon passing the dark spots of the attackers they then let go of the stones and continue with their journey to their hustles.
She adds that the stones have so far proved to be an efficient way of protection because the attackers have not yet devised a counter method to deal with them.
