John Muntu won the inaugural 10 km Silver Jubilee road race at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Saturday in Nairobi.

The 2014 Standard Chartered Nairobi International marathon 10km runners up breasted the tape in 20:44.39 to beat Parklands Sports Club 15km champion Sammy Nyokange into second place in 20:44.61 as Stephen Rasweyi was third in 20:48.16.

Ephraim Mwangi timed 2:45.22 to win in the one mile race beating Victor Kamen (2:47.01) into second place as James Muange (2:48.39) was third. The veteran’s 10km category was won by Stephen Kihara.

The women category saw a tough Monica Njeri stopping the timer at 25:22.10 to win the 10km race ahead of Sheila Mbaku (26:08.54). Mary Wangari completed the last podium finish place by clocking 27:38.00.

The event organized by Silver Jubilee Foundation was meant to sensitize the public on the plight of the elderly where an interdenominational church service was conducted after the race.

Silver Jubilee Foundation founder/director Samuel Mwangi said that they will organize a half marathon in February next year to raise funds for a home, dormitory and hospital for the elderly to be built in Karugu, Kiambu County. “The half marathon will be an annual event which we shall be using to raise funds and create awareness on the plight of the elderly in the society,” concluded Mwangi.
