A Nairobi court has jailed Irene Odhiambo for five years without an alternative of bail for stealing a child.
She pleaded guilty to the charge of child stealing before magistrate Enock Cherono admitting that she fraudulently took and detained the baby on Oct 26, within Kiamaiko area in Huruma.
Ms Odhiambo said she is a mother of two and begged for forgiveness but the court ruled that the offence was serious and called for a deterrent sentence.
The child was traced to the woman’s house in Kawangware in Nairobi after a neighbour who had seen her sneak with the baby alerted the police.
She has 14 days to appeal.
