The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) has failed to account for nearly three quarters of the Sh4.3 billion it received from the national government to finance a medical insurance scheme for the military and civil servants.
Auditor-General Edward Ouko says a newly released audit report on the state of the agency’s finances shows that the NHIF failed to account for Sh3.5 billion it spent on the medical scheme in the financial year ended June 30, last year.
The report, which National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale tabled parliament last week says auditors were unable to ascertain whether the Ministry of Public Service and the disciplined forces got value for the billions pumped into the medical scheme.
