Traders of Burma Market, Nairobi used flaming tyres to block Jogoo Road in a demo against alleged land grabbing on Friday morning.
The traders hurled stones at motorists preventing access to the road and causing a traffic snarl up.
They engaged police in running battles as tear gas canisters were lobbed to disperse them.
The traders, known as Shauri Moyo furniture makers, said an auctioneer closed the market claiming he owned the land.
He said they were issued with a community title deed when they registered the piece of land in 1973.
