
Kenyan sides in the ongoing men’s Africa Volleyball Club Championship in Souses, Tunisia, tumbled, losing their third matches of the event on Monday evening.
General Service Unit (GSU) lost 3-2 against Bourj Bouaririj of Algeria while Kenya Prisons were handed their second defeat of the continental tournament after going down 3-1 sets (25-14, 21-25, 25-19, 25-21) to Somoha of Egypt in pool D.
GSU and prisons face Herculean task of reaching quarter-finals.
Kenya Prisons and General Service Unit need to win their two remaining matches to progress to the quarter-finals of the ongoing Africa volleyball club Championship in Sousse, Tunisia.
Both teams have won only one match each from the three played so far.
Kenya league champions Prisons beat Ugandan neighbors KAVC 3-0 (29-27, 25-13) in their first match but lost to the Sporting Stars of Setif (Etoile Sportive Setif) of Algeria 3-2 (25-12, 25-15, 23-25, 21-25, 15-4) and 3-1 (25-14, 21-25, 25-19, 25-21) to Somoha of Egypt on Monday.
GSU beat the Armee Patriotique Rwandaise (APR) 3-1 (25-18, 25-13, 21-25, 25-22) but lost to champions Al Ahly of Egypt 3-0 (25-14, 25-14 and 25-17). They also succumbed to Bouaririj of Algeria 2-3 (31-33, 21-25, 25-21, 25-11, 15-1) in their third match on Monday.
Today Kenya Prisons take on Al Ahly Benghazi of Libya then round up their group matches against newcomers Support United of Zimbabwe.
GSU are expected to play either Nemo Stars of Uganda or Expoir of Ivory Coast.
In Pool C, Somoha of Egypt took a 25-14 led in the first set before Prisons recovered to win the second set 25-21. Prisons lost the third and fourth sets 25-19 and 25-21.
With the results, both teams will be forced to win their remaining fixtures to earn a top two finish in their respective pools to advance to the next stage of the championships.
In other group D matches, Ahly Beni Ghazi of Libya beat Support United of Zimbabwe 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-16) while Setif of Algeria overwhelmed KAVC of Uganda 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-16).
Al Ahly beat the less experienced Espoir of the Democratic Republic of Congo 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-21), in Pool “C”, while Etoile du Sahel rocked Atletico of the Cape Verde 3-0 (25-10, 25-12a, 25-16) in Pool “A”.
