Thousands of South Africans and heads of state and government from around the world today congregated in Mandela’s home village of Qunu for his burial.
95 candles were lit to signify the 95 years Nelson Mandela lived and his contribution during this time.
Only 450 people were allowed at the burial site that included family and close allies
Malawian President Joyce Banda, Prince Charles, were among the heads of state present. Others include, American civil rights activist Reverend Jesse Jackson and talk show host Oprah Winfrey among others.
Contrary to initial reports, Archbishop Desmond Tutu was present at the burial service.
Since his death on 5 December aged 95, many more have paid their respects. Mandela has been hailed as “a giant of history” for his fight against apartheid.
South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma and Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete were among those who eulogized Mandela.
