In the second Serious Request #Supadada video report, reporter Edna goes to Mathare to investigate the flying toilet.

In Nairobi’s Mathare valley, where over 500,000 people dwell in informal settlements, few houses have toilets built in and even public toilets are shared by on average 300 households. People pooping into plastic bags and throwing them outside, a practice popularly known as flying toilets, have become a common sight in the slums of Nairobi. Rivers and empty plots are being contaminated with human feces and there’s a real danger of spreading diseases as people live nearby and
kids play in the water.

What’s the solution for the stench and contamination? In an effort to clean up the neighbourhood, an NGO has started a pilot project introducing leased banza toilets, mobile facilities allowing people to dispose of their waste without causing pollution.
