There was tension in Mathare slums yesterday when panga wielding youth attacked NYS cohorts who were conducting demolitions in the area.
The youths who were armed with pangas and knives are said to have been hired by landgrabbers in the area who were trying to protect their land from being reposessed for development by the NYS.
According to the NYS cohorts landgrabbers are working with the area’s adminstration leaders to deny them from developing the lands.
“These youth have been hired by the landgrabbers who do not want us to put up development projects in this area as instructed by the president,” said one of the NYS cohorts.
“We have received several threats from them in the past, but the fact that we were unrelenting in reposessing these grabbed lands, has pushed them to hire goons to instill fear in us,” shelamented.
Majority of NYS cohorts claim to have been sent text messages telling them to quit their quest to develope the areas.
Mathare assistant commissioner Angeline Oduor however denied the reports saying her office only stands for a lawful process of development and not unlawful demolition of property.
