Many girls would have had their education walked out of the school and proceeded on with their lives, but this group of girls formerly students at the St. Teresa’s Girls in Mathare slums have decided to give back to the school which they say literally raised them and made them who they are today.
The group known as St. Teresa’s alumni which consists of girls who grew up in the Ghetto meets every year to hold a fundraising in support of bright and needy girls who are unable to afford school fees.
The group’s Chairperson Stella Mwangi says as a group they agreed on a minimum of 1000 shillings every year as a contribution for the fundraiser.
‘The group first came to life on Facebook then after a few consultations and interactions we decided to come together and do a fundraising every year in support of the needy girls” said Mwangi.
This year the group will hold the fundraising on Saturday at the school grounds in Mathare slums.
“Those who cannot afford the 1,000 shillings are encouraged to contribute sanitary pads to support the boarders,” said Mwangi.
Mwangi says apart from raising funds, some old girls have also volunteered to sponsor girls from form one all the way to form four.
Some of the alumni’s members will be coming from different parts of the country and others as far as the Norway and the United States.
