Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia’s former organizing secretary Tom Ataro is dead.
Ataro died last week on Friday at the Nairobi West Hospital where he was admitted in a critical condition at the Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
Ataro who failed to offer his candidature to reclaim the organizing secretary seat due to poor health will be remembered for starting the Gor Mahia Welfare Players Association chaired by ex Gor ace Hezron Omondi.
This was after he was touched by the poor living conditions of the team’s former players with the club’s former captain Julius ‘Awilo’ Owino fending from a dump site.
Being a darling of players with the Safaricom Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA) Men’s Most Promising Award in 2010 George “Blackberry” Odhiambo gifted Ataro with a Lexus valued at Sh13 million last year.
Ataro a Nairobi County Government employee also awarded children of Gor Mahia branch officials with secondary and university scholarships worth Sh275, 000.
The scholarships were given to 30 children from 30 branches out of the 100 club branches from across the country.
The family spokesman Dan Ataro said Ataro’s body will be transported from the Nairobi West Hospital mortuary on February 20th to his house in Drive In estate before the cortege leaves for Sakwa in Bondo where he will be laid to rest on February 22nd.
He leaves behind two widows and six children.
