Over 3000 new cases of fistula in women are reported in the country every year.
Flying Doctors Society of Africa Chairperson Dr. Eunice Kiereini says only seven percent of these cases are treated in our medical facilities.
Speaking during the launch of surgical operations campaign of Fistula Kiereini also noted that majority of women with fistula are those from very poor background.
“We want to have a fistula free Kenya by the end of this campaign” said Kiereini
The Fistuls surgical campaign launched today by the Flying Doctors Society is planning to treat at least 200 women with the condition this year.
Dr Susan Mboya-Kidero Chief Executive Officer of Zawadi Africa also expressed concern over the number of new cases describing it as daunting.
“These figures are daunting, i know if the same condition affected men, it would have been dealt with a long time a go,” said Mboya.
The project will cost approximately 4 million shillings.
