Approximately 15,000 deaths are reported in the country annually due to chronic exposure to smoke or house hold air pollution.
Managing director Kenya Union of Savings and Credit Cooperatives limited (KUSCCO) George Ototo says the only solution to this is through the use of clean cook stoves.
Speaking when he launched the Sacco’s Jiko Safi fund a credit facility that will enable SACCO members purchase the stoves, Ototo observed that the fund will help mitigate against the dangerous effects of indoor air pollution.
On his part industrialization PS Dr Wilson Songa lauded the jiko initiative challenging them to market them in the rural areas to help save the environment.
The jikos will retail at 3,500 shillings.
