Kenyan Women’s Rugby team posted good results in the one-day Africa rugby Confederation Women’s Seven-a- side held in Machakos on Saturday , beating Namibia and Senegal before losing to South Africa in the cup final.
Following this results Kenya could be admitted to the International Rugby Board Women Sevens World Series next season but it faces a hurdle as it has to play a qualification match in September before being included in the series.
Each continent will produce two teams meaning that Kenya and South Africa will be Africa’s representatives by the virtue of playing in the CAR final which is expected mid-this year.
Susan Carty, the IRB Women Development Manager has lauded the team’s efforts saying that Kenya has already made known of its presence in the global scene and advised people to brace for the best team from Kenyan rugby.
She was pleased with the IRB’s efforts to develop women rugby saying that this will be of great value to Kenya and Africa as a whole. “We are looking forward to a more engaging involvement with our member Unions through coaching clinics and other relevant initiatives that we will roll out.”
On his part, Mwangi Muthee, the KRU chairman lauded Kenyan ladies for their effort in finishing second. “It has shown that they can compete with even the best considering there was great competition. We need to build from what they have achieved by developing depth in the team.”
