Of the 290 Members of Parliament elected in last year’s General Elections only 16 are women.

Karua was Kenya’s only female presidential candidate in the 2013 election, and is one of Kenya’s most prominent female politicians.
A recent survey conducted by Centre for Multi Party Democracy also revealed that while political parties sponsored 13 women to run for the senatorial seat, no single woman won the election as a senator.
