hawkersHawkers from Marikiti market on Tuesday took to the streets to protest what they term as arbitrary rates by the county government.

The hawkers are against the recently passed county finance bill 2013 that will see increased levies on their goods that risk running them out of business.

According to chairman all Wakulima traders Kaguta Githaiga, a lorry that transports products to the market will be charged up to 42,000 from the initial 14,000, while a sack of passion fruits to be charged 100 shillings from 30 shillings rates which he says is too expensive.

Githaiga has accused the Nairobi governor Evans Kidero for not initiating dialogue with them to come up with reasonable rates before they are implemented.
