A seven year old boy was killed and several other people displaced following flash floods that rocked Mathare slums over the weekend.
The boy who is from Mathare Mashimoni area is said to have been carried away by the furious floods while he was trying to wash his feet by the River.
“We have tried looking for him everywhere but to no success, though the police say they are still looking for the body, ” says Opere.
Charles Opere the boy’s neighbour says their efforts to rescue the boy from the floods were futile. Opere says hundreds of other people who were affected by the floods have decided to put up with their neighbours until the heavy rains come to an end.
“The floods carried, matresses, sufurias and so many other materials. Those affected are just putting up with the neighbours waiting for the rains to subside then they go back, ” he stated.
Many people in Mathare slums choose to stay near the river because the houses next to the river are very cheap compared to the rest.
