A football player from a state championship in the Indian Premier League died after succumbing to injuries sustained as he celebrated scoring a goal.
Peter Biaksangzuala, a midfielder for Bethlehem Vengthlang FC in the Mizoram Premier League (MPL) in the north-east of the country, suffered damage to his spine after attempting a somersault celebration following a goal in the 62nd minute against Chanmari West on Tuesday.
Eyewitness reports say the defensive midfielder landed awkwardly while celebrating and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where spinal cord injuries were confirmed. Despite emergency surgery and treatment in intensive care, he died on Sunday.
The club, who confirmed they will retire his number 21 jersey as a mark of respect, said in a statement: “It has been a sad day for Mizoram football and the demise of the footballer shook his team-mates, footballers and fans all over Mizoram.”
Bethlehem Vengthlang coach Danny Lalduhawma added: “Peter was a lad with a good manner who always maintained his discipline on and off the pitch. I don’t think there are many like him.”
