Nairobi Eastlands’ camp Toyoyo will have an artificial athletic turf in three months and a bus, Makadara Member of parliament Benson (Bena) Mutura announced in Nairobi, Friday.
Speaking at the venue (Jericho grounds) during the ground breaking ceremony, Bena said “the engineer will complete this turf in three months’ time. This place will be special because we intend to also have a few terraces, changing rooms and toilets for sports participants.”Bena also added that he will buy a bus that will be used by the constituency sporting teams in case of need to travel to away matches.
Jericho grounds popularly known to the residents also as ‘owanjo soo’ is famous for producing Kenyan sporting legends in football, boxing, basketball and athletics.
Former Harambee stars tactician Jacob ‘ghost’ Mulee observed that “ My career as a footballer started here together with other legends like John Keffa Taso, john ‘shoto’Lukoye, William Inganga and many others,” said the coach who had seven national team players from Jericho in his side.
Bena also hopes to install floodlights at camp Toyoyo, “Nairobi Eastland’s is also known for its criminal activities. I encourage residents to participate in sports 24 hours. We will have floodlights here. We can conquer the myth of insecurity by courageously coming out to do sports at any time any day,” the MP said and added that the field will also create a few employment opportunities.
Bena donated set of uniforms to Young Rovers Fc, St Ann’s girls Fc, Makadara youth and Jericho Youth under 13 football teams. Ofafa Jericho boys’ high school and Aquinas boy’s high school rugby teams also benefited from a set of uniforms.
Bena however did not want to disclose how much the constituency has spent on importing the artificial turf from an unknown European country. He wished Makadara constituents well as they involve themselves in sporting activities and promised more to come.
