Kenya is set to receive two athletic running tracks worth 500 million Kenya shillings, sports cabinet secretary Hassan Wario revealed in Nairobi, Wednesday.
An optimistic Wario said that during his recent visit from Qatar, he was able to strike a deal with the oil rich middle easterns.
“Qatar has agreed to donate two running tracks to Kenya. We are hoping that in the next few months to come we shall be able to have them here with us,” said Wario.
The cabinet secretary also added that negotiations are still in place between his team and the oil rich Middle East nation.“Extensive negotiations are currently still taking place. We are hoping that it won’t just be a onetime deal, but also we need to develop and nurture raw talent in Kenya,” Wario said.
The cabinet secretary is also set to have a series of meetings with all athletic stake holders in Kenya in regards to where the tracks will be laid.
“After we have the tracks in Kenya, I will conduct several meetings with different stake holders to decide where to place it. I was thinking may be one at a high altitude area while the other one, say somewhere like down at the coast. But all this will have to be discussed later,” he said.
Wario in his conclusion also said that the Kenyan government will take issues of doping seriously because such cases are hindering the development of sports in Kenya. “Kenyan athletes are known to win fairly by using natural substances. We cannot afford to get involved in such issues that are going to taint our good name internationally,” he concluded.
