President Uhuru Kenyatta last night launched a lighting project in Kibera slums in a bid to improve the living standards of the slum dwellers.
Uhuru was given a warm reception by the hundreds of Kibera residents including the area MP Ken Okoth.
The street lighting project is among the many other projects the government has launched to improve the lives of the people.
“From independence, this is the first time government has reached Kibera and we promise that it is here to stay,” Uhuru said.
The National Youth Service has also been deployed in Kibera and is conducting a clean up exercise by cleaning sewerage systems and building toilets.
At least 3,000 Kibera youth have been employed to work alongside the NYS team as part of the Youth Empowerment Programme through which they earn salaries.
Also accompanying Uhuru at the launch was Deputy President William Ruto and Deputy Governor for Nairobi County Jonathan Mueke.
