The Kenya national Union of Teachers and parents union have lashed out at the government following a proposal that public primary schools start teaching pupils in mother tongue.
Speaking to ghetto radio news KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion said the move was backward and not in good faith adding that the union will oppose it.
“Language used in schools should be left to the teachers as per the policy, there are two official languages English and Kiswahili, if it is teaching in Kiswahili we have no problem, if it is true that that is a policy directive then it is misplaced and we shall not implement it as teachers”
Kenya National Association of Parents Musau Ndunda concurred with Sossion saying that the move will make pupils in public primary schools perform poorly in languages compared to their private schools counterparts.
Ndunda said the country’s education system was at its peak and they will not allow anyone to interfere with it.
Ministry Of Education on Monday gave a directive that public primary start teaching mother tongue.
