A total of 8.25 Million shillings together with other prizes will be up for grabs in this year’s Kenya Premier League (KPL) Sports Journalist Association of Kenya (SJAK) Player of the Year Award which will be held on December 9 in Nairobi.
This is as a result of a new partnership between the KPL, league sponsors and betting company SportPesa and LG electronics who have joined together to organize the red carpet event to honor best performers in the recently concluded SportPesa Premier League (SPL).
Speaking at a hotel in Nairobi on Wednesday (November 11) while unveiling the new developments, KPL CEO Jack Oguda underscored that this year’s event will be better thanks to the new sponsors.
He noted that award, commonly known as FOYA, acknowledges players who have worked hard in showcasing unrelenting talent all season, making the league competitive.
“We are grateful to SJAK, Sportpesa and LG for helping revamp this awards gala. It really will help increase the level of competition in our league and the quality of what we get. The players will get better as a result and it will reflect in the national team as well,” Jack Oguda told reporters.
The Most Valuable Player of the Year will be the biggest winner of the event as the lucky player will walk away with Ksh 1million which is an improvement from the previous Ksh 200,000 from last year.
Big winners will also be the Golden Boot and Golden Glove award where both winners will pocket Ksh 500,000 each.
Midfielder and defender of the year will bag Ksh 300,000 apiece while the Young Player winner will enjoy a whooping Ksh 200,000.
According to Marketing Director, Kester Muhanji, “Sportpesa believes in talent development and we are in this for the long haul. Next year we want to make it even better and this is a challenge for the players to work even harder because there is a huge likelihood next year the award will be even bigger.”
The criteria for selecting the winners will be based on a list of nominees selected by the coaches and sports journalist who will forward the names of the picked players to the SJAK who will select the best.
This is contrary to the previous method, where KPL coaches picked the nominees while coming up with the eventual winners.
On the selection process, SJAK Chairman Chris Mbaisi said, “We want this to be long partnership and we therefore must have a credible process where the rightful winners are awarded and I urge the panel of judges to be committed in their work.”
Winners will also get other including 42 inch smart HD TV screen together with other gifts courtesy of LG Electronics who have bankrolled the event to a tune of Ksh 1.5m.
