The world third all-time try scorer Collins Injera will lead a 12-man squad of the Kenyan Rugby Sevens scheduled to represent the country on November 14-15 in the Africa Rugby Olympic Qualifier at the Barnard Stadium, Johannesburg.
While naming the full squad today (October 11) at the RFUEA, the Kenya Sevens head coach Benjamin Ayimba has considered an experienced squad bearing in mind that this is the first major test for him after being re-appointed back to the post.
According to Ayimba, the Kenyan team which has been training in high level altitude at the Nandi Hills is upbeat of qualifying for the Rio summer Olympics showpiece.
“We are well prepared. We had had smooth training and we are fired up. Getting to the Olympics will be a good show and we are looking forward to the qualifiers,” Ayimba said.
In his squad, Ayimba has retained KCB’s Andrew Amonde as the skipper while Mwamba flyer Injera will be his assistant during the two day knock-out event where the winner will qualify for the Olympics.
After an impressive showpiece at this year’s edition of the Safari Sevens in October, Frank Wanyama makes it to the squad.
Biko Adema of the Total Nondies and Billy Odhiambo of Strathmore Leos are also included while Eden Agero of Kenya Harlequins and winger Willy Ambaka also make cut to Ayimba’s list.
However, Jeff Oluoch of Homeboyz earns his maiden call up in the national squad as team while accompanied by team mates Augustine Lugonzo, Leonard Mugaisi and Oscar Ayodi.
Dennis Ombachi who started training with a shoulder injury picked up during the Japan leg of the World Rugby Sevens World Series last season has been passed fit enough to make the squad.
Conspicuously missing from the squad is Humphrey Khayange and Oscar Ouma who were not included in the 12-man shortlist.
On Khayange’s absence, Ayimba said, “Oscar Ouma did not show up for training and Kayange is not available. His leadership is very good. He has been a good mentor but for now he is not fit enough.”
Kenya will headline Pool A with the first fixture against Mauritius slated for Staurday. Madagascar and Senegal are also in the same pool.
Pool B features Zimbabwe, Zambia, Nigeria and Uganda while Pool C comprises Tunisia, Morocco, Namibia and Botswana.
