Borrusia Dortmund’s Marco Reus makes a comeback to the team ahead of the first Revierderby of the season as Dortmund take on FC Schalke 04 on Sunday November 8.
Reus was on hand to lash in two goals and lead his team to a 3-1 victory over SV Werder Bremen. It was the extension of a fine run of form for both the 26 year-old and his club as the crunch clash with Schalke approaches.
After a four game winless run which ended with their humiliating defeat to FC Bayern München at the beginning of October, Dortmund have rediscovered their form as autumn has drawn on; winning all of their last five in all competitions – all of them by a margin of at least two goals.
The club’s greatest weapon at the moment is the partnership between Reus and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is on delicious form, having delivered seven goals and two hat-tricks in October.
The Gabon international, who became the first player in BVB history to score 13 goals after 10 league matches this season, has hauled himself to the top of the Bundesliga goal-scoring chart alongside FC Bayern München’s Robert Lewandowski and is eager to continue his rich vein of form in November, starting with this derby.
If victory over Bremen showed anything, it was that Reus steps up when Aubameyang is misfiring. The German international game-changing goals came just as the Gabonese had squandered several opportunities, a rarity in recent weeks.
Reus and Aubameyang complement each other wonderfully, their versatility adding fluidity to Dortmund’s attack. Ahead of the derby against Schalke, however, it is Reus, more than anyone else, who is in the spotlight.
After his fourth goal of the season helped FC Schalke 04 salvage a point at home to FC Ingolstadt 04 last week, Leroy Sane is looking forward to his first ever derby.
With Schalke going in to the game six points behind their great rivals, the Royal Blues will be battling to stay in the race for the Champions League spots as well as local pride.
This, after all, is Germany’s fiercest and most iconic local rivalry. Both Dortmund and Schalke hail from cities in North – Rhine Westphalia, the heartland of both Germany’s industrial and footballing tradition.
On Saturday (November 7), defending champions Bayern Munich, who are momentarily tripped following their draw last week, hope to return to winning form at the Allianz Arena against hard-fighting Stuttgart.
The Bavarians were held to a disappointing goalless draw by Eintracht Frankfurt last Matchday in a game where the opponents executed their defensive strategy flawlessly against the league leaders, who had won 10 matches in a row.
Pep Guardiola’s squad, still comfortably ahead by five points from second-running Borussia Dortmund on the log, should be comfortable against lowly Stuttgart, who in beating newly-promoted club SV Darmstadt 98, 2-0, at the Mercedes-Benz Arena last Sunday, recorded only their third win of the season.
