How UB40 concert proved that the Oldies can still dance the night away

$

U.K legendary reggae band UB40 was in the country over the weekend for their Real Labor of Love 40th Anniversary tour.

The gig which went down at carnivore grounds was mainly attended by a different crowd as opposed to what is normally witnessed when reggae artistes stage a performance in the country.

Unlike the common, weed-smoking young crowd witnessed during reggae concerts, UB40’s concert was attended by a large number of quadragenarian and quinquagenarian (40 and 50 year olds)

Unlike what was witnessed at Chris Martin’s concert at Impala grounds, UB40 concert was a relaxed environment that even had round tables and seats for guests.

The reggae gig which was also attended by the president had an easy going crowd that proved that indeed age is just a number.

The crowd mingled freely as they sang along to every hit pelted by the band and for those who were in the VVIP area, they even managed to take photos with the president and the former premier.

So does this mean that UB40 does not appeal to the younger crowds?

UB40 is a band that has managed to appeal to all generations and their hits have the ability to make you just want to sing along. Problem is, many youngsters just want a gig that allows them to mingle (amid puffs, Maybe) so for many, they would rather listen to the band on their playlists than to watch them live.

All in all, the Real Labor of Love concert gave a certain generation an opportunity to watch a reggae concert without the slightest worry and it indeed proved that music has no age group.

FKF CEO ASKS KAKAMEGA HOME BOYZ CHAIRMAN NOT TO POLITICIZE MATCH FIXING ISSUE

Football Kenya Federation Chief Executive Officer Barry Otieno has chastised Kakamega HomeBoyz Chairman Cleophas Shimanyula for blaming the federation for not doing enough to curb the match fixing menace in the league.

Those found guilty include Ugandan George Mandela, who has been handed a lifetime ban from all football related activities.

Speaking to Ghetto Radio Sports Barry said that it is wrong for the Kakamega Homeboyz Chairman to blame the Federation saying that match fixing is a global problem that needs all stakeholders to come together and fight the scourge saying that politicizing the issue is not fair.

“It is wrong for the Chairman to turn the blame on the Federation for something that happened in the team that he is running,” he lamented.

Moses Chikati, Festus Okiring and Festo Omukoto, all Kenyans, have similarly been banned from taking part in any kind of football-related activity at national and international level for a period of four years.

He said that the issue was very sensitive discussing it publicly was not right since the three parties Fifa the team and the Federation were involved in handling the situation.

Barry told off Shimanyula saying that he is the one directly running the team and while doing their investigation with Fifa Seven of his players met Fifa representative in regard to the situation.

He termed Shimanyula’s statement unfortunate saying that he cannot disclose the measures they have taken as it could jeopardize the situation.

“The issue of match fixing is a global problem especially in the established leagues in Europe and Asia and Kenyan situation cannot be isolated from the rest of the World,” he bemoaned.

In a statement written by a local newspaper Shimanyula who is said to be the whistle blower castigated the Federation of not doing enough to tackle the vice.

“They were lied to by the coaches who are the main culprits but have somehow been set free. Match fixing is happening in our league and our federation doesn’t seem interested in investigating the vice. I have to thank Fifa for the efforts to have a clean game,”Shimanyula said.

Shimanyula had also accused Ugandan coach Paul Nkata of being involved in match fixing.

Kenya Film Classification Board in partnership with police officers yesterday failed to impound matatus playing dirty content during its day long crackdown.

KFCB CEO Ezekiel Mutua and his officers had started the crackdown exercise with matatus plying the Lang’ata Road route all the way to Kiserian.

The officers who were draped in reflector jackets branded KFCB were accompanied by police officers and could be seen flagging off matatus along Lang’ata Road during the crackdown.

We had 100% compliance as all the vehicles we stopped for the checks complied on the spot and we didn’t have to impound any,” said Mutua in a tweet.

Mutua however stated that despite not impounding any matatus, they managed to recruit clean content ambassadors from the conductors, drivers and the police.

“We provided the classification guidelines on the kind of content to be aired in PSVs. Those licensed must observe the GE rating in the content exhibition. Any contravention will lead to prosecution,” he said.

Anyone who keeps up with Keroche heiress Anerlisa Muigai knows she updates all the happenings in her life (well almost all) on social media.

The lass recently surprised many of her followers who did not know that she has a baby sister.

According to Anerlisa, the reason why her followers have never laid eyes on her sister Tecra, is because, her sister hates the spotlight.

Anerlisa also narrated how her sister is always cold towards her and would even abandon her at a public place should anyone recognize them.

“My sister is so cold towards me. When we walk together then she sees a lot of people, she always leaves me like somebody she doesn’t know. (That is always embarrassing to me btw) she also introduces me as her friend lol, the worst is when she denies me. She just hates the spotlight and that is why I don’t post her on my page even if it’s a family photo” she wrote

Gospel Industry rocked with yet another Beef

The Kenyan gospel industry has once again been rocked with beef between its artistes.

Gospel singers Stephen Kasolo and Weezdom have been embroiled in an online beef following Peter Blessing’s woes at EMB records.

Earlier, gospel singer Bahati had shared a Youtube video explaining why he had Peter Blessing arrested revealing that the latter was in breach of their contract.

Kasolo left a comment on that video calling out the EMB boss, an action that angered EMB’s number two Weezdom.

Weezdom called out Kasolo as hypocrite in the gospel industry arguing that Kasolo is among cartels crippling the industry.

“You’re one of the fake hypocrites in the industry. You used to be so happy with me time nilipokuwa natusi Bahati juu unamchukia. Now that I’ve made peace with him ukakua adui ukaanza matusi. Hujawai post Peter Blessing on social media ama his songs but now you are all over Instagram and Facebook saying that you stand with him.” Read part of Weezdom’s comment

Kasolo then fired back at Weezdom telling him to stop depending on Bahati because his career is stagnating.

“Wewe utagrow lini ujisimamie kama seed? Utategemea mwanaume mwenzako hadi lini? Toka kwa Bahati ujisimamie tukutambue. Wewe ndio chanzo cha huyo boy kutoka kwa Bahati. Weezdom utastagnate miaka nenda miaka rudi. Mara kwa Sadic, Mara kwa Bahati.” Kasolo responded

The two were in a long back and forth that soon escalated to phone calls and text messages.

In one leaked conversation, the two hulled insults at each other with Weezdom terming Kasolo as a villager and Kasolo retorting with Weezdom’s level of education.

GHETTO RADIO’S STAND ON GENGETONE CONTENT

Ghetto Radio would first of all like to appreciate Kenya Film Classification Board’s effort to ensure that clean music and video content is fed to the masses.

As Ghetto Radio we recently conducted an opinion poll on air and asked the listeners what they thought of of the Gengetone genre of music. From the opinion poll, more than 60 percent of the listeners appreciated the music albeit with clean content.

Ghetto Radio also got to understand that Gengetone music has empowered many youths and at the same time seen an up-spring of untapped talent in the music industry.

While KFCB is working hard to achieve clean content in the airwaves, gagging all the avenues i.e Radio Stations, Youtube and Matatus  that the Gengetone musicians are using to market themselves is not the perfect solution.

This is why Ghetto Radio has taken the following stand on Gengetone ;

  1. As a station we will keep playing Gengetone, however selectively based on the content.
  2. The station will go an extra mile of moving into mashinani and getting into the studios to help the young men and women produce good music with clean content.
  3. . The station will work with The ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs State department for Youth plus other government related agencies notably KFCB to ensure this transformation is successful.

Ghetto Radio we subscribe to our 3E content policy where we Entertain,Engage and Empower.

POWER STAGE TO SPICE UP SEASON-OPENING KCB GURU NANAK RALLY

$

0

Racing crews believe that the introduction of a power stage in the National Competition Rules (NCRs) will add the much-needed zest to this weekend’s KCB Guru Nanak Rally slated for Stony Athi on Sunday.

Mombasa based rally navigator Victor Okundi says the power stage will no doubt enhance competiton and indeed give spectators and crews scintilating racing experience.

“I’ve not had time to go through the NCRs (National Competition Rules) but if it is as per the WRC, it’s a welcome opportunity to score points and make it more competitive.

So one would just have to fight to be in the top 10 then fight tooth and nail for the top 3 slots for extra points. Not a bad idea,” said Okundi.

Group N Champion and Premier Class driver Jasmeet Chana is excited that the power stage is being introduced in a year Kenya is rejoining the WRC.

“It couldn’t have come at a better time when Kenya is preparing for global status. Being a key ingredient of the WRC competiton, it will definitely see drivers give it that extra push for points,” Chana  said.

Power stages have over the years been synonymous with World Rally Championship (WRC) events.  They are usually run as a final stage of a rally in the WRC what with additional championship points for the top five crews through the stage.

This is regardless of where they are classified in a rally.

Locally, power stages have been few and far between and devoid of bonus points. But following the timely addendum onto the National Competition Rules (NCRs), crews will now be privileged to score bonus points following the running of the power-stage.

Raju Chaggar, who is the Clerk of the course of weekend’s season-opening  Guru Nanak Rally, recently, in an pre-event bulletin, nominated the repeat run of the SGR section as the power stage; where spectators will savoir exhilarating displays and crews treated to some hair-raising cockpit thrills.

Guru Nanak, one of the most prestigious rounds of the eight-leg Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC), will be flagged off from KCB Kitengela Branch then head straight to SGR, Stoni Athi and Kifaru regions for action proper.

Kenya Motor Sports Federation (KMSF) General Manager Mwaura Njoroge in an interview reckoned that the power stage facet “will no doubt add the much-needed zest to spectators and competitors alike.”

“From 2020 onwards, each motor club organizing the KNRC will now be required include a power stage onto the event itinerary.

The power stage will be less than 5km of similar surface to the event and can’t be part of the SSS (Super Special Stage).

But organizers will be required to declare in the Supplementary Regulations (pre-event set of rules) which stage will be the power stage.

The most interesting aspect of it is that retirees of the rally can come back to do the power stage if it is logistically possible, but at the discretion of the Clerk of the Course and the Stewards.

In a nutshell, power stages will be designed with speed and aptitude in mind,” Mwaura explained.

According to the local regulations, points will only be scored in the overall KNRC Class with the fastest crew taking 3 points, second fastest 2 points and third fastest 1 point.

The points on the power stage will be additional to what drivers score in the championship.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Motor Sport Federation (KMSF)  has made several changes to the NCRs this year.

Other than the inclusion of the power stage rule, the points scoring system has also changed.

Unlike in the past when the winner racked up 25 points, this time round the maximum points scope is 30 points followed by 24 for number twos and 21 for the number threes, et cetera.

In 2020, it will also be mandatory for competing cars to have an environmental blanket to mitigate silage.

Another new rule in 2020 will see the competitive element of the rally finish at the end of the “Finish Time Control In” .

The Prize Giving will commence after the last car in the parc ferme and 30 minutes have elapsed since the publication of the Provisional Unofficial Classification to allow for any protests at the end of the rally.

KMSF has also included a new category in T4 Cross Country class which will feature  massive machines like Tomcats and Range Rovers.

What’s more, the top 8 seeded drivers in the previous season, and who have renewed their license in the current year, will rotate in the staring order regardless of their seeding.

2020 KCB KENYA NATIONAL RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP CALENDAR
February 8-9: KNRC 1- Guru Nanak Rally (Sikh Union Nairobi)

The MARLEY75 celebrations will encompass all things music, fashion, art, photography, technology, sport and film, providing fans unprecedented access to archives from the legendary artist’s estate in new, thoughtful and innovative ways.

The official music video for “Redemption Song” premiered on Bob Marley’s YouTube channel on 5th February and already enjoys well over 60K views.

The video was created by French artists Octave Marsal & Theo De Gueltzl, and made with 2,747 original drawings in a sequence of breathtaking animation.

The video uses powerful symbols to amplify the magnitude of the song’s timeless lyrics and importance in today’s world. It also highlights Bob’s contribution to the empowerment of black civilization, as well as his manifestation of hope and recovery for all mankind.

Is Kenyan’s hate for Gengetone a huge scam?

$
0
0

Since the birth of Kenya’s new age music genre ‘Gengetone’ a lot of people have had a negative say regarding the kind of message it portrays.

The fast-beat music has been bashed by a section of Kenyans who have termed it as very immoral. Truth be told, almost all gengtone songs are about women’s dearies, sex and drugs something that has seen many call for it’s total ban in the country.

Last year, Gengetone group Ethic suffered a major blow after moral cop Ezekiel Mutua ordered a ban on their song ‘Tarimbo’ which basically glorified nonconsensual sex.

Let’s take a walk down memory lane. shall we?

Remember the days of Deux Vultures? (If you don’t then you’re probably too young to be reading this)  Deux Vulture was a Kenyan band made up of Colonel Mustafa and Nasty Thomas.

The group had hits like Monalisa , Kinyaunyau and Adhiambo C. So what does Deux Vulture have to do with gengetone?

Well, their songs also worshiped a woman’s package with a bit more artistry and caution than what is witnessed today.

Nonini too,  brought us ‘Manzi wa Nairobi” and ‘Mtoto mzuri’ back in the day and never once was there an uproar as there is right now. In fact, most of the Calif records artistes had some very controversial songs back in the day but never once had their tongues gagged, could it be because one Ezekiel Mutua wasn’t around then?

Do the new kids on the block need to learn from the godfathers of the industry to use art to mask their dirty language or have Kenyans finally woken up to clean the industry?

In a recent interview with Colonel Mustafa, he had a rather different take to the gengetone debate.

According to Mustafa, Gengetone is just a new age Kapuka (a genre that Deux Vultures was associated with).

Mustafa argued that even back in the day, artistes faced backlash but it was low key because social media was not a huge deal then.

“There was a time deejays would not play Kapuka because they argued that it had no meaning but these are the things being sung now. We started this kind of music. Gengetone  is just the same with Kapuka, Genge and Boomba the only difference is the sheng language which has changed.” He said

Mustafa says he is ready to work with gengetone artistes and has even released a song dubbed ‘Maloko’ that is along the lines of the new genre.

So are Kenyans really tired of this new genre, or the kind of lyrics? Can we compare the Kenyan ol’skul music to Gengetone?

All in it seems that Gengetone artistes are trying to revamp the game a little. Recently Sailors gang released a new song featuring Nadia Mukami and many people were impressed at the level of musical artistry. In fact, the song has faced zero backlash from netizens. Maybe they should mentor their peers.
