Being a hermaphrodite (having both woman and manly sexual organs) and making peace with that harsh reality is not easy, and Apostle Dark an Rukih Moses a 35 year old Kenyan Gospel artiste is not an exception either.
To him the last 35 years have been filled with ridicule, shame and guilt. Moses found it difficult to be accepted by people around him especially with his wife with whom he fathers three adopted children (with the same condition).
However, whilst speaking to the Nairobian, Moses is now ready to come out of the closet and said he is proud of being a man and a woman and going public will help create awareness and is advocating against discrimination of people suffering from his condition.
“I underwent a medical examination and the doctors confirmed I have a normal uterus, ovaries and I can bear children. “My mother tells me that she had to conceal the truth for fear of wrath from the community. The Luo community treats such cases as a bad omen. I could have been killed had my community gotten wind of my condition. She also told me that she feared that we
could have both been thrown out of our home,” Moses told The Nairobian.
The Taarab Gospel singer further added that it is when he turned 14 that his body began to develop feminine body organs like breasts and hips. “I was shocked when I experience my first monthly periods. My breasts and hips begun to grow. However, my mother took me to a local dispensary where I was given some medication and some of the features like the growth of breasts and hips stopped.”
The Standard Digital Entertainment further reports that during a past interview Moses claimed he became more aware of his condition after his stepfather once molested him, something he says, he doesn’t want to get into details.
