Residents of Kariokor have vowed not to move an inch  from their houses to pave way for  the urban renewal project by National Government and the County Government of Nairobi.

According to Kariakor Estate Resident  Association, the residents want ownership of their current houses first  saying Nairobi County Government did not build Kariokor  Estate and that  the houses were given  to them by the National Housing Corporation through loans.

Association Chairperson  Samuel Gikandi  says the loan was all paid but later Nairobi City County Government took over the management of the houses in Kariokor and has been imposing rate fees on them for more than 50 years now.

‘‘We want ownership of these houses  before then this houses belong to us and the County Government of Niarobi has no rights over them .. and we can also confirm that Kariokor is up to modern standards and is not bad.’’ Gikandi stated.

So far they have participated in three meetings with county government of Nairobi and  investors but nothing much has been discussed on the issue of ownership.

‘‘No need of upgrading this estate again it does not make sense. What we want the two governments to do  is renovation,’’ He added.

A group of civil society activists is calling for the decriminalisation of petty offenses in a bid to stop the gross violation of human rights of the poor and the vulnerable in the society.

KNCHR Commissioner Susane Chirusa says most people criminalised and punished for petty offenses in Kenya are majorly in the cities and major urban centers.

Speaking during a meeting on decriminalisation and reclassification of petty offenses with the ICJ Group, suggested that a special alternative means of dealing with petty offenders be formed instead of subjecting them to a court process.

Dr Gilbert Sebihoge ED, Network of African National Human Rights Institution (NANHRI) argues that criminalisation of petty offences leads to criminalisation of poverty.

He adds that petty offences are minor criminal acts which attract less severe punishment and are considered to be of a lower level of seriousness compared to felonies.

The petty offenses they want decriminalised include loitering, drunkenness, prostitution, idleness, begging, indecent exposure among others.

Uhuru’s Old Tactics Of War On Graft Will Not Work – Report

A group of activists has faulted President Uhuru Kenyatta’s mode of fighting corruption saying it is unlikely to work.

In a report released by Africa Center of Open Governance, the report says Uhuru is applying the tactics used by his predecessors in the fight against corruption that never worked.

The report says that the Goldenberg and the Anglo-leasing scandals remain monsters whose faces have never been unmasked.

“High profile arrests and indictments, aggressive repatriation attempts, re-vetting and suspending of procurement officers and revitalising and funding blue-ribbon multi-sectoral agencies have all been tried before and proven to be ineffectual,” the report stated.

The report further condemned state officers abusing their powers and facilitating corruption.

Speaking during the release of the report, Mr Wachira Maina a constitutional lawyer says that corruption cases; Goldenberg, Anglo-leasing and Eurobond never get resolved even though they never really died

“They are never meant to be resolved because resolving them would undo the ‘implicit transition bargain’ of Kenya politics that successors will not harm the interests of their predecessors. Yet these cases cannot be allowed to die because that would expose the big fishes involved,” said Maina.

The Auditor General Edward Ouko who was present during the release of the report suggested that every cent either for citizen or leader  should be monitored and recorded inorder to help fight corruption.

“We should mainstream asset recovery and lifestyle audit as part of the anti-corruption efforts.” said Ouko.

Enthusiastic football lovers from the garage follow the tournament

Every garage worker and football lovers from Nairobi’s Eastlands area are waiting for the Jua kali garage finals between Enginer and Ogopa to determine the garage champions on Saturday June 1st.

This is after team Ogopa thrashed Unido 2-0 in the The JUA KALI garage football tournament semi final that was played on Monday.

Ogopa will now meet Engineer in the finals after it beat Buffing 2-0.

The Jua Kali Tournament which is being played at the Umeme Grounds in Ziwani, kicked of early this month.

Garages recruited youths who have expressed talent in football ever since they were young children but are on the verge of drug abuse making them lose their focus.

Jua Kali Garage football tournament has provided an opportunity for garage workers to stop engaging in drug abuse such as alcohol leading to addiction every time there is no work at the garage.

The game between Enginer and Buffing saw players from both side experiencing muscle pulls and stitches which are results of unfitness due to stimulation from alcohol.

Speaking to Ghetto radio sports chairman Kelvin Kawaya says that most of the new garage works are youths and when there is no work in the garage they result is alcohol abuse leading to addiction.

“This is the first ever Jua kali Tournament in Kenya. Our main aim is to breakdown the culture that most Jua Kali workers have of drinking away their hard earned money in bars after work. We instead want them to focus on keeping fit and training for matches or preparing for tournament,” said Kawaya.

Speaking to coach Daniel Odinga of Enginer says that the players were showing weakness on the pitch because there is no enough practice to keep the players fit.

Currently the tournament is being funded by money from the organizers who are garage workers.

“The tournament has no sponsors in terms of facilitation and depend on the Ziwani field which is always booked so the only opportunity we get for practice is not enough.” he says.

The organizers of the tournament are hoping that well wishers or corporate organizations will come on board and help them run the tournament.

“Most of the drugs which are being sold in illegal pharmacies are expired and mostly have side effects to mainly children.” He adds.

Jackson says that most of the areas affected are mostly the Eastlands areas where businesses have been formed due to high demand of health services.

ICC MEN’S T20 WORLD CUP : KENYA, UGANDA SERVE UP LAST-GASP THRILLER

Kenya pipped hosts Uganda by one, precious run, in a thrilling ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Final  on Wednesday.

That victory saw Kenya put themselves in a very strong position to go to the Global Qualifier in UAE in November, ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia next year.

Batting first, Kenya were again indebted to the free-scoring Rakep Patel, who blazed a 22-ball 51. Crucially, Patel took advantage of some loose fielding off the penultimate delivery of the Kenyan innings, turning a single into two.

Having  kept the strike, he then smashed the final ball of the innings for six, which proved telling in the final outcome. His lusty blows saw Kenya rise to 145 for six, and repelled Charles Waiswa’s spell of four for 38.

There was also a handy contribution from Irfan Karim and a quick 22 from skipper Ngoche as Kenya set a testing total for Uganda. The chase was going along well enough for Uganda at the halfway stage, as they were on par with the required rate.

Riazat Ali Shah tried manfully to get them home, with his 44 from 35 balls keeping the hosts in the hunt.

However, terrific death bowling from Kenya ensured that it went to the last over.

The run out of Waiswa on the fourth ball of the final over was also crucial, juxtaposed with how Uganda had ended in the field.

Nigeria were also winners, as they defeated neighbours Ghana by 28 runs.

Ademola Onikoyi (49) and Ovais Yousof (33),  were the key men with bat in hand, as the Yellow Green’s notched 135 for eight.

Onikoyi hammered four sixes in his knock, and there was also a late cameo from Vincent Adewoye (23 not out from 13 balls).

In reply, Ghana couldn’t find the inspiration upfront, with talisman Simon Ateak falling cheaply. Tail-ender Kofi Bagabena was the highest contributor, with a run-a-ball 23, but it was too little, too late.

Adewoye rounded off an excellent day with a spell of four for 18, a day short of his 19th birthday.

In the third match, Namibia made short work of a struggling Botswana, trouncing them by ten wickets.

The youngsters were routed out for 46 in 12.1 overs, with Christi Viljoen nabbing five for just 9 runs. In reply, the Namibians needed just 3.5 overs to win, with Nikolaas Davin hammering 37 from 19 balls.

Rain overnight put paid to any chance of play at Lugogo today while the morning match at Kyambogo was also washed out.

Ghana won the toss and chose to bat first against Uganda at Kyambogo this afternoon.

Scores in brief:

Kenya v Uganda
Kenya 145 for six (R Patel 51 not out, I Karim 28, C Waiswa four for 38)
Uganda 144 for nine (R Shah 44 not out, H Kayondo 31, N Odhiambo three for 30)

Knut ,Government  New Curriculum War Continues

Push and pull between  Kenya National Union Of Teachers and the Ministry of Education  over  new curriculum and the Competency Based Curriculum roll out continues with the union now saying parliament was sidelined in the process .

Speaking to media today  KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion accused the Ministry of Education under stewardship of top official of evading the parliament in the whole process of adopting new curriculum that is is seeking to wipe out the 8-4-4 system.

‘‘ I have said several times that Kenyan  teachers are still not equipped  to have CBC roll out in classrooms, the trainers of this curriculum itself are incompetent and do not have skills to impart on  teachers.’’Sossion said.

This comes a day after government’s warning on teachers who will not heed to  CBC roll out programmes in classrooms that they will be sacked immediately.

Government spokesman Cyrus Ogina says the CBC roll out will continue despite opposition by KNUT.

According to him  government has done enough to ensure  it is  effected without further delays.

Knut wants  the  roll out process stopped indefinitely, more teachers to be employed and  schools infrastructure upgraded before the government can go ahead  on the same.
