Google today has a special doodle in celebration of the life of the late Dr Margaret Ogola, an award-winning author, medical doctor, and human rights advocate.

The doodle will appear on Google’s homepage in Kenya and will coincide with what would have been the late author’s 60th birthday.

Dr Ogola is best known for her novel, The River and the Source, which was a set book in KCSE from 1999 to 2004.

The novel won the 1995 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize best first book in the Africa Region, and the Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature the same year.

The River and the Source follows four generations of Kenyan women in a rapidly changing country and society.

The book has been translated to Spanish, Lithuanian, and Italian. It is one of the four publications credited to the author.

“Local doodles provide a way for Google to connect with Kenyans about what matters to them and to help celebrate the important moments.

We celebrated Wangari Maathai and today we’re celebrating a literary figure, Dr Margaret Ogola,” stated Dorothy Ooko, head of communications and public affairs, SSA.

Dr Ogola wore several other hats, other than that of writing. She was the Medical Director of Cottolengo Hospice for HIV & Aids orphans from 1994.

It is a role that saw her receive the Familias Award for Humanitarian Service of the World Congress of Families in 1999 in Geneva, Switzerland.

She was also a paediatrician at Kenyatta National Hospital and headed the Family Life Counselling Association of Kenya (FLACK) and the Health and Family Life Programme at the Kenya Episcopal Conference.

The latter entailed coordinating the administration of over 430 health facilities run by the Catholic Church in Kenya.

As part of the commemoration, a special reading of her book The River and the Source will be held at Prestige Bookshop, Mama Ngina Street at 5pm.

Readings will be led by her family and several Kenyan authors.

Google started honouring people, events, anniversaries and holidays with doodle designed by one of its engineers in 1999.

The company has since then honoured an array of African personalities such as Nobel Peace Prize winner and world renowned environmentalist Wangari Maathai, South African singer and activist Miriam Makeba, Stephen Keshi, former captain and coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s national soccer team.

Hopekid also added that the scandal broke him and he had to seek advice from his Bishop.

“When this scandal went viral, i submitted the whole issue to my bishop, Welley Odendo of life pool chapel. He gave me a wise perspective. If it was up to me, I’d have done unthinkable things like posting her on social media. I knew if i posted her, she is a suicidal and the unexpected would have happened it would be all on me. I didn’t want that on my conscious. That’s why i kept quiet. “he added

All Boda boda and Tuk Tuk  operators in the country will be required to take insurance cover for passengers and pedestrians.

Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich says the proposal is to help mitigate the high number of accidents  whose victims are mostly from the low income members of the society.

According to Rotich the insurance cover will help accident victims who are mostly from the low income members of the society access medical services easily.

While appreciating the efficiency of the mode of transport given by boda boda operators Rotich noted that most accident victims have been forced to seek help from friends and relatives.

“Bodaboda transport has become an important sector in our economy, it is one of the largest employers of our youth and also provide cheap and convenient transport for Kenyans, despite the above benefits Mr. Speaker, this mode of transport has proven to be very risky to riders passengers and pedestrians, “ stated Rotich.

“In Order to mitigate against this risk Mr. Speaker, i propose to amend the insurance motor vehicle third party risk certificate of insurance rules to require all passengers carrying boda bodas and tuk tuks to have an insurance cover for passengers and pedestrians,” he stated.

Sonko Calls For The Protection Of Counties Interests

Senators have been urged to protect the interest of county government in order to ensure devolution succeeds.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko says without support from the Senate, County Governments cannot succeed to fully Implement their development agenda.

Speaking on Thursday, after the Senate Delegated Legislation Committee paid him a courtesy call at City Hall, Sonko said county governments need the support of the Senate in order to safeguard the interest of the devolved units.

“I’m happy your team has promised to protect the interest of counties, since without your support, counties are at risk of losing a lot including funds and political support from other arms of the government,” said Sonko.

In reference to his recent appearance before the Senate County Public Accounts and Investments Committee, the Governor urged the Samuel Poghisio-led Delegated Legislation Committee to relook into issues raised by county chiefs during their appearance before Senate committees.

“When you go back please look into serious issues raised by Governors concerning counties especially issues pertaining Auditor General’s reports. I remember during my appearance before the Senate, I raised very serious issues on how officers from the Auditor General’s office attempted to extort money from me in order to come up with a favorable audit report of the Nairobi City County Government,” said Sonko.

Sonko stated that apart from the role of oversighting counties, the Senate should also step up its mandate of protecting the interest of counties as enshrined in the constitution.

“Your role as the oversight body is well stipulated in our constitution, but you are also required to act as protectors of counties to ensure the devolved units are well funded to guarantee Kenyans development across the country,” he added.

On his part, Poghisio assured Governor Sonko that his committee will ensure all laws are applied to safeguard the interest of counties.

“You have raised important issues, let’s discuss more when we have another detailed meeting,” Poghisio said.

Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga also echoed Poghisio’s sentiments and called on County Assemblies to play their roles effectively to support Senate’s role of oversighting counties.

“Although most county assemblies have no capacity to deal with oversight roles, we need them to take the center stage to look into reports like audit queries instead of summoning Governors to the Senate over minor issues. It’s only MCAs who know better on the use of funds and development projects by Governors in the counties,” she said.

Mombasa Senator Mohammed Faki on his part guaranteed Sonko that the Senate will continue to fight for the rights of county governments to ensure they get their rightful share of revenue.

“At the moment we are fighting for more funds for county governments to ensure devolution succeeds. You know the National Assembly wants counties to be allocated Sh310 billion in the 2019/20 financial year, but the Senate wants the counties to be allocated Sh335 billion in the Division of Revenue Bill. We are seriously fighting for your rights so don’t be worried because that’s our mandate,” the Senator stated.

The meeting was also attended by Nairobi County Government Executive members, County Secretary Pauline Kahiga, Nairobi Deputy County Secretary Leboo Morintat, Chief of Staff Brian Mugo among others.

Speaking during the meeting Leboo urged Senators to make it a routine and visit development projects by county governments in order to get clarification of use of funds by the devolved units.

Boda Boda Operators Vow To Defy Rules, Give Govt Two Conditions

Boda boda operators have vowed to oppose the government’s proposal for a comprehensive insurance for each boda boda operator.

The operators through their association Bodaboda safety association of Kenya have instead given the government two conditions within which they must meet before they comply with proposal.

Through their chairman Kevin Mubadi, the association first wants the government to ensure that payment period does not go beyond one month and that it should be put in the law.

Mubadi explains that payment of claims has always been delayed by insurers because they take advantage of vulnerable riders.

“The payment of claims is really delayed for almost two years and even others don’t pay completely because they take advantage of vulnerable riders,” he stated.

The other condition that the operators have given is for the government to ensure that the insurance premiums go down as riders do not have much money to afford the expensive covers.

“We wish to invite relevant government body to have a discussion with us and have a better way of achieving mutual benefit,” he further stated.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary yesterday proposed that all Boda boda and Tuk Tuk  operators in the country take insurance cover for passengers and pedestrians.

Rotich argued that the proposal will help mitigate the high number of accidents  whose victims are mostly from the low income members of the society.
