Young People Ask for Sexual Reproductive Health Education In Schools

Over 60 percent of youth feel that there should be more classes on age appropriate sexual reproductive health (AASRH) education in schools according to a survey conducted by Geopoll.

The survey highlighted that 62 percent of Kenyans learn about menstruation in school while only 12 percent learn from their parents.

“As one of our top concerns, we identified that 38 percent of respondents said they would want to know more about HIV/AIDS, 22 percent would want to learn more about contraceptives and only 6 percent wanted to learn more about sex,” said the Geopoll Director of Project Management, Tavian MacKinnon.

According to the survey, 62 percent of respondents who attended government schools had classes on AASRH and relationships between boys and girls. Only 48 percent of those who attended religious schools had classes on AASRH.

The survey went ahead to denote that almost a third of the respondents who have attended school preferred to get information on AASRH through social media compared to other methods of communication.

42 percent of those who have not received any formal education prefer to get their education from Radio and Television.

Further, it became apparent that parents are one of the least used sources of information on AASRH education at only 5 percent in Nairobi and Homa Bay Counties, 11 percent in Kilifi, 4 percent in Narok, 8 percent in Nyeri and 9 percent in Wajir County.

“We found it interesting that when asked about gender equality, 78 percent of respondents disagreed with the gender statement that ‘…There are times when a woman deserves to be beaten.’ 68 percent of respondents also disagreed with the gender statement that ‘A woman should tolerate violence to keep her family together,’” said Mr. MacKinnon.

“We have rolled out a program on comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) that will take place in three core counties namely Kilifi, Narok and Homabay. This survey was informed by the findings from media and a report done by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) that put the three counties with the highest number of teen pregnancy rates and as such we are rolling out an intense three-year mitigation campaign in those three counties. We will have more of these conversations on our online campaign dubbed WIWIK-‘What I wish I knew’ and physically in the counties effective immediately,” JIACTIVATE chairperson Mr. Grayson Marwa remarked.

These findings were extracted from respondents between the ages of 18-24 years in 6 counties including Kilifi, Homabay, Narok, Nyeri, Wajir and Nairobi with the latter three serving as a comparative set.

In view of this, JIACTIVATE will be flagging off a three-year program on AASRH specifically targeted to Kilifi, Narok, and Homabay.

The campaign will expose the key issues facing young people and their sexual reproductive health rights. These issues are aimed to influence both behavior and policy change.

Murang’a Women Representative Sabina Chege has finally responded to reports that she wept after she was heckled at an Embrace rally in her county.

While accepting that she indeed shed tears, she says the tears were just as a result of high emotions she had for president Uhuru Kenyatta.

She says that the emotions were as a result of the good projects worth millions of shillings Uhuru’s administration had given to the county.

She further dared anyone with video of her being heckled to produce it saying that it did not happen.

“I dare anyone with a video clip of me being booed to produce it. I was never heckled; I was only overwhelmed by the love that the President has for the great county. Receiving vaccination machines worth Sh. 36 million and cheques for women and youth worth Sh. 25 million is not a simple joke. I was overcome by the love and cried upon realizing that there are people who just want to rubbish the development agenda in the county and in the region,” she said.

A video of Sabina Chege weeping and wiping her tears went viral on Friday with reports saying that she was heckled for trying to sell the hand shake agenda.

The event was attended by Youth and Gender Affairs Chief Administrative Secretary Naomi Shebesh, Ms Priscilla Nyokabi of the National Gender and Equality Commission and elected women form across the country.

Boxer In Agony After Sonko Fails To Honour Promises

Former Olympian and African boxing Gold medalist Suleiman Bilali has called on Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to fulfill the promise he had made to him while undergoing rehab.

Sonko and Businessman Jamal Ombok last year promised Bilali a house and a job when they took him to rehabilitation.

Bilali a former boxing champion had sunk into alcohol addiction and depression after he was dismissed from the Police Service.

In his usual style of publicly showing his philanthropic acts, Sonko took Bilali to the Parklands rehabilitation Center, with journalists and photo journalists covering every step of the rescue mission.

Unknown to Bilali he was to be dumped and taken back to his original environment that enabled his alcoholism after the public charade was over.

“After the governor came to my rescue Jamal promised us employment and a house and up to now we are still waiting, “ he said.

“Since leaving rehab we have been in communication with Conje and what has made her relapse to drinking is because the promises that were given has not been fulfilled,” he added.

Four months after undergoing a successful rehabilitation programme, Bilali was taken back to his dungeon in Muthurwa, the job and new house promise remaining a mirage.

“Jamal’s biggest problem is alcohol. We hope that after he comes from rehab, he will be a coach or a boxing referee,” said Jamal.

In a previous interview with Ghetto Radio News, Bilali who is also a former GSU officer stated that he was later run over by a matatu, an incident that saw his employer dismiss him from service.

Bilali suffered a head injury during one of his training and that marked the beginning of his woes as he now became mentally ill, he braved this for two years and dared to step back in the ring again despite a series of misfortunes among them being run over by a matatu.

Four days after demonstrations at  the Nairobi County Assembly a group of reformed youths that was given first priority by the Nairobi governor Mike Sonko to participate in Ngarisha jiji project is crying foul.

The 10 youths claim that they are yet to get their jobs back after  their names were deleted and replaced by a list of names affiliated to Utali ward  member of county  assembly Wilson Ochola.

The group stormed the assembly demanding answers from Ochola who later used the house leadership led by minority whip Peter Imwatok to convene  a meeting with them and reached a deal that the youth resume work today.

However the group was today morning barred from working by the area ward administrator who took them back to the MCA for fresh registration.

Walter Okello one of the aggrieved youths alleges that the MCA and the ward administrator are playing ping pong games to deny them the Ng’arish Jiji jobs.

‘‘The MCA is joking with our lives we were  to go back to work today morning and now the administrator is telling us  to and clear with Ochola,’’  Okello said.

Meanwhile Ochola has avoided media over the matter and when he was confronted by our reporter he disappeared  without a response.

The group has also accused Ochola of deducting sh. 3000 from their pay.

In the Ngarisha Jiji Project the governor declared that the program to be run by ward admins in collaboration with MCAs and the  gang reformists were to be given first priority.
